WUA Section-A-Long: Week #11

Making Progress

As the world is in such a crazy place, I am finding my crochet to be an even bigger part of my life. I have finished 2 projects in the last week, and I have another one almost finished. It might even be finished by the time this post goes live. I have also ordered so many yarn goodies from indie dyers across the country as a way to support them during this trying time. I might even do a big haul post when everything gets in.

I am still posting section designs I made while making Sweet Tooth Hotel sections. That campaign is over now, and we are waiting for the absolute final counts for the project. We know we made it over half way, and we know that we made enough for the installation. The installation itself has been postponed with all that is happening.

Make sure you have checked out the original section-a-long post, if you haven't already for the list of supplies you will need, and if you missed any of them, the other patterns are all linked at the bottom of that post!

Getting Inspired

This week I am bringing you yet another stitch pattern that was inspired by a pattern test. As you may know, I LOVE pattern testing, especially for Stacie Humble. I have now tested 4 of her patterns with the most recent being the Winter Birch Shawl. You can find the surprisingly quick fingering weight shawl on her Ravelry page. Maybe soon I will get a full blog post up about the shawl (and dyeing the yarn for it) but for now I will tempt you with the picture.

The crossed double rows are centered between the mesh rows

The stitch I am pulling from this shawl is the crossed double crochet stitch. This stitch has a great texture, and you know I love texture. If you can do the double crochet stitch, you can do the crossed double crochet stitch!

You can find a written tutorial and a video tutorial for the crossed double crochet stitch at Heart Hook Home. This blog is a great stitch learning resource!

Section Pattern

Supplies:

  1. Worsted weight yarn. I used Mainstays Basic Yarn.
    • Guys! I completely forgot to weigh out these sections before I mailed them off last week! I feel super bad about it. Anyway you should need somewhere around an ounce for each one.
  2. Crochet Hook. I use a 6mm but a 5mm or 5.5mm would work as well. Just check the width and length measurements as you go.
  3. Measuring Device! See the main post for details.
  4. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends
  5. Scissors

Pattern Notes: The ch 2 turning chain counts as a stitch, the ch 1 turning chain does not count as a stitch.

Abbreviations:

  • HDC: Half Double Crochet
  • FHDC: Foundation Half Double Crochet
  • XDC: Crossed Double Crochet
  • SC: Single Crochet
  • Ch: Chain

Pattern:

  • Row 1: 22 Foundation Half Double. Turn
    • Or another even number
  • Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as a stitch). XDC across. DC in the last stitch. Turn
    • There should be 10 sets of XDC
  • Row 3: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch). HDC across. Turn
  • Row 4-(?): Repeat Row 2 and 3.
    • I needed approximately 21 rows for this stitch
  • Add a single crochet border. (If desired or needed to make the 7" by 9" measurements)
  • Finish off and weave in the ends!

I hope you enjoy this section. If you are feeling adventurous and want to try out a fingering weight crochet pattern, I highly recommend the Winter Birch Shawl. I finished it in a week and will be wearing it all spring long.

Stay safe during this social distancing period of our lives. If you are wanting to make some human connections, come join us on the WUA Makers Facebook page! This is also a great time to catch up on any sections you may have missed.

Be sure to come back next Monday for pattern #12! I have some red and teal colored sections for you the next couple weeks!

Spread Kindness Soap Sack Pattern

Making to give By this point, many of you know that I have a huge passion for making things to give to other people, whether those people are friends and family or to those in need. We are in Week #5 of the Section-A-Long I am hosting for Warm Up America (WUA). I decided to take a short break from section making when inspiration struck for a pattern idea for soap sacks. What are soap sacks you ask? They are basically wash cloths made in such a way that they become carriers for soap! They provide an all in one way to get clean and can be really fun. While they can be made and used by anyone, they have become a handmade item collected for those in need as well. The lovely people over at S.A.C.K (Supporting a Community with Kindness) have led an effort to get these soap sacks distributed all over the country. S.A.C.K recently partnered with WUA to collect even more and I must say the response from the WUA Makers group has been inspiring. So whether you are making to donate or to g

WUA Section-A-Long: Week #9

Using up what is left The original plan was to get 6 sections from each color I had picked out for my Sweet Tooth Hotel Sections, but because of small differences in the skeins, I had enough left of two colors to do another whole section. I had some left of the other two colors as well, and they will be coming back for a fun stripey pattern later this year! If you are reading this "live" remember that we have until March 18th to mail all sections for the Sweet Tooth campaign. We still have a LONG way to go to reach those lofty goals set at the beginning of the campaign so crochet away! Make sure you have checked out the original section-a-long post , if you haven't already for the list of supplies you will need, and if you missed any of them, the other patterns are all linked at the bottom of that post! Using minimal amounts of yarn I pay a lot of attention to how much yarn each section takes to make. Partially because I enjoy details like that, and partia

WUA Section-A-Long Kickoff (Section #1)

Getting Ready Y'all, I am so excited to get this section-a-long started! Today we will be starting with a very simple section to help get your feet wet with section making. This is not my go-to pattern/stitch when I am making sections, but it is a great starting place. Make sure you have checked out the original section-a-long post , if you haven't already for the list of supplies you will need. Hopefully you have picked out some fun yarn to get started with, or maybe you are using this as a scrap/stash busting project. Each section pattern will come with an approximate amount of yarn needed for that pattern so you will have a good idea if you have enough if you are planning on going to scrap route. Foundation Single Crochet Section #1 will use the single crochet stitch. However, we will not start the section with a starting chain. We will start the section using a foundation single crochet stitch. Don't worry, I will be sharing several good resources for you to lear
