WUA Section-A-Long: Section #3

There is a new challenge!

This week, Warm Up America announced a huge new challenge! They have put out a call for 10,000 sections that they need my mid-March! These sections will be a part of this year's installation at the Sweet Tooth Hotel. The piece is called Intangible and will be entirely made out of fiber. Even better, Warm Up America is going to get a portion of the ticket sales. As for the challenge, they are collecting red, yellow, green and teal sections to be a part of the installation. Personally, I am looking forward to knowing that my yarn creations are going to be a part of such an amazing event. For the next several weeks, my section patterns are going to be made out of red, green, yellow and teal. I am actually hoping to get every pattern done in each of the four colors.

My Sweet Tooth section colors!

Let's get to it! Make sure you have checked out the original section-a-long post, if you haven't already for the list of supplies you will need, and if you missed it, check out the first and second patterns already on the blog.

 My Favorite!

This week we are making my favorite, absolute go-to, section pattern. It also goes against one of the guidelines I stressed the last two weeks. We will be using a foundation chain, and not foundation stitches. I haven't been able to quite figure out how to make a foundation stitch work for this one, and the chain works out well for me.

The pattern for this week is the Half Double V-Stitch Pattern. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I even found a tutorial for you from Daisy Farm Crafts.

Section Pattern

Supplies:

  1. Worsted weight yarn (approx 26-28 grams, which is less than 1 ounce, but not by much). I used Red Heart Super Saver (Orchid and Tea Leaf), Mystery Grab Bag yarn from Yarnspiration (Blue), I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby (Fire Red), and Mainstays Basic yarn (Gold and Teal).
  2. Crochet Hook. I use a 6mm but a 5mm or 5.5mm would work as well. Just check the width and length measurements as you go.
  3. Measuring Device! See the main post for details.
  4. Tapestry needle to weave in the ends
  5. Scissors

Pattern Notes: I put the last HDC in each row in the space created by the chain 2, instead of in the actual turning chain.

Pattern:

  • Row 1: Chain 24 (or any even number)
  • Row 2: In the 4th chain from the hook, *(HDC, Ch 1, HDC), skip 1 stitch* Repeat from * to * across, HDC in the last chain. (10 HDC-V stitches)
    •  (HDC, Ch 1, HDC) is a Half-Double V stitch
  • Row 3: Ch 2, turn. (HDC, Ch 1, HDC) in the chain space of each half double v-stitch across. HDC in the space created by the turning chain (10 HDC-V)
    • You can also place in last HDC in the top of the turning chain instead of the space if you choose.
    • For this section, it is probably best to measure 3 to 4 rows in to make sure your width is correct. Keep in mind, if you are short width wise and don't want to restart, you can keep the length a little short and add a border around the section.
  • Row 4-(?): Repeat row 3 (23)
    • I used 23 to 24 rows for my sections. Make sure to measure your finished size!
  • Fasten off and weave in the ends.
I use this pattern more than any other, especially when I am working with over an ounce of yarn.

You can start sending in your sections whenever you are ready. If you are sending in for the Sweet Tooth campaign, make sure the sections are in by March 18th! And don't worry, once the art piece is done all sections will be made into blankets and donated to those in need!

Warm Up America also does a live unboxing every Tuesday at noon (central) on their Facebook page. If you are available and interested, it is a great chance to see what all the volunteers have been sending in and to get updates on various campaigns.

Again, major thanks for joining me for this section-a-long. It is something I have been thinking about doing for a long time and one of the main reasons behind starting this blog. With the new campaign, I decided that the break could wait for at least one more week, so Section #4 is coming next Monday, January 27th!

The blog also has a subscribe function enabled so you won't miss a post!

Spread Kindness Soap Sack Pattern

Making to give By this point, many of you know that I have a huge passion for making things to give to other people, whether those people are friends and family or to those in need. We are in Week #5 of the Section-A-Long I am hosting for Warm Up America (WUA). I decided to take a short break from section making when inspiration struck for a pattern idea for soap sacks. What are soap sacks you ask? They are basically wash cloths made in such a way that they become carriers for soap! They provide an all in one way to get clean and can be really fun. While they can be made and used by anyone, they have become a handmade item collected for those in need as well. The lovely people over at S.A.C.K (Supporting a Community with Kindness) have led an effort to get these soap sacks distributed all over the country. S.A.C.K recently partnered with WUA to collect even more and I must say the response from the WUA Makers group has been inspiring. So whether you are making to donate or to g

WUA Section-A-Long: Week #9

Using up what is left The original plan was to get 6 sections from each color I had picked out for my Sweet Tooth Hotel Sections, but because of small differences in the skeins, I had enough left of two colors to do another whole section. I had some left of the other two colors as well, and they will be coming back for a fun stripey pattern later this year! If you are reading this "live" remember that we have until March 18th to mail all sections for the Sweet Tooth campaign. We still have a LONG way to go to reach those lofty goals set at the beginning of the campaign so crochet away! Make sure you have checked out the original section-a-long post , if you haven't already for the list of supplies you will need, and if you missed any of them, the other patterns are all linked at the bottom of that post! Using minimal amounts of yarn I pay a lot of attention to how much yarn each section takes to make. Partially because I enjoy details like that, and partia

WUA Section-A-Long Kickoff (Section #1)

Getting Ready Y'all, I am so excited to get this section-a-long started! Today we will be starting with a very simple section to help get your feet wet with section making. This is not my go-to pattern/stitch when I am making sections, but it is a great starting place. Make sure you have checked out the original section-a-long post , if you haven't already for the list of supplies you will need. Hopefully you have picked out some fun yarn to get started with, or maybe you are using this as a scrap/stash busting project. Each section pattern will come with an approximate amount of yarn needed for that pattern so you will have a good idea if you have enough if you are planning on going to scrap route. Foundation Single Crochet Section #1 will use the single crochet stitch. However, we will not start the section with a starting chain. We will start the section using a foundation single crochet stitch. Don't worry, I will be sharing several good resources for you to lear
